2007 PEN Southwest Book Awards Call for Entries

CALL FOR ENTRIES
We invite all members of PEN in the Southwestern states to participate in the 2007 contest for excellence in writing. The contest is open to full (regular) members of PEN Center USA and PEN America living in Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, Oklahoma, and Arkansas. It is also open to Associate Members of PEN Texas. Books published between January 1, 2002 and May 15, 2007 in the categories of POETRY, FICTION, and NONFICTION will be eligible for awards. Self-published books are eligible. Three finalists will be chosen in each category and they will receive plaques. The winner in each category will also receive a $500 prize, co-sponsored by PEN Center USA and PEN Texas.

DEADLINE
Entries must be postmarked no later than October 5, and received no later than October 15, 2007.

WHAT TO SEND

Please submit three copies of each title, an entry form affixed to the inside front cover of each copy, and a check for $25 per category entry, payable to PEN Texas. Mail to Dr. Sean Cotter, School of Arts and Humanities MS JO 31, The University of Texas at Dallas, P.O. Box 830688, Richardson, TX 75083. The books will be retained by PEN Texas. For acknowledgement of work received please enclose a stamped, self-addressed postcard.

HOW TO SEND
Ship books, entry forms, and fees in the same package, preferably by priority mail. Do not send fourth class book rate unless ample time for delivery is assured. Place the payment for the entry fees in an envelope on top of the books in the package or pay through PayPal below (please make sure to note the name of your entry when you pay). Identify submissions on the package as “PEN SOUTHWEST BOOK AWARDS.”

JUDGING
Books will be judged by writers from PEN Texas. Judges are ineligible for the competition in the category in which they are judging.

AWARD PRESENTATION
Finalists in each category will be notified by e-mail on November 1, 2007. The winners in each category will be announced at the ALTA and PEN Texas Southwest Book Awards banquet in Richardson, TX, on November 8, 2007. Finalists will receive a plaque, winners a check for $500 and a PEN plaque. Books of the finalists and winners will be displayed at the award ceremony. The banquet will take place from 7:00 to 9:00 PM, in conjunction with the 30th Anniversary Conference of the American Literary Translators Association. The Executive Director of PEN Center USA, Adam Somers, will present the awards.
